Using Discourse as a mailing list

  1. Sign up to Discourse using your email address, and log in.

  2. Click user icon, then your user name:

  3. Click “Preferences”:

  4. Click “Emails”:

  5. Click “Enable mailing list mode”, and select frequency of emails:

  6. By default, you will be subscribed to posts in all categories. To disable notifications for a category, visit the category page and select the “Muted” option in the notification preference menu.

  7. To respond via email, simply click “Reply” in your mail client, and reply as indicated in the email footer.

  8. To post a new topic via email, use the following addresses:

Just an FYI, I use the Slicer discourse this way and I find the most useful mode of working to be:

  • get email notifications for discourse posts
  • open discourse in a new tab using link at bottom of email
  • compose and post from discourse interface

This way I get to see discourse in the regular context of my email, but some of the formatting is lost (like python code isn’t correctly formatted in email). And I can compose my replies in markdown with live preview. Plus @ mentions autocomplete in discourse.
